Boehmite Grinding Jet Mill Production Line in Wuxi

In the rapidly evolving electric vehicle (EV) market, the demand for high-performance battery materials is at an all-time high. A leading chemical manufacturer based in Wuxi, China, recently partnered with Epic Powder by purchasing one set of jet mill to enhance their production of Boehmite—a critical material used in lithium-ion battery separator coatings due to its excellent heat resistance and chemical stability.

The client faced a significant bottleneck in their production line. To meet the quality standards of Tier-1 battery cell manufacturers, the Boehmite powder required: 1) A consistent particle size distribution (PSD) to ensure uniform coating. 2) Zero metallic contamination, as even trace metals can cause short circuits in batteries. 3) A steady throughput to meet increasing purchase orders.

After conducting material trials in our laboratory, Epic Powder provided a customized MQW Jet Milling System. The system was engineered with a ceramic lining (alumina/zirconia) for all contact parts. This specialized design ensures that the Boehmite remains ultra-pure by preventing any contact with metal surfaces during the high-velocity grinding process. The integrated high-precision horizontal classifier allowed the client to strictly control the top-cut size.

The MQW jet mill achieved a sharp particle size distribution, eliminating oversized particles that could damage battery separators. Optimized airflow dynamics reduced energy consumption per ton of material compared to the client’s previous equipment. Since the process is isothermal (using compressed air expansion), the physical properties of the Boehmite remained unchanged.
